Readers Respond: Stocks vs. Real Estate - Which Do You Think Is a Better Investment?

Like most great debates - Coke vs. Pepsi or Ford vs. Chevy - investors have a lot of opinions of the question of whether real estate or stocks are the better investment. Which do you prefer for your own portfolio? Real estate properties? Blue chip stocks? Share your opinion with the other readers and tell us why you feel the way you do. Tell Us Your Opinion

Stock index funds

For most busy college educated professionals not connected with the real estate industry, we have little time to swing a hammer. We are better off being serious about our careers and advancing in the careers and throw the excess money into low expense stock index funds. In my case I was an average salaried engineer in 2000 when I found by consult g I could double my income. I did that over a period of two months and went semi independent. In the last twelve years my income sometimes was three and a half times what I made in 2000, and I was mid-career back then. With the tpexcess money I put it away in stock funds, gold, savings bonds, and municipal bonds. I diversified because I could afford a lower annual gain. Now I have comfortably over $1,000,000 in net worth and rent apartments...one in the city I work and one at my base address. I still save over $70,000 per year after taxes and expenses. Real estate would have tied me down, and my career would not have changed.

real estate is the best deal for those that have made money/wealth, however, stocks is for beginners which enable them to grow wealth that may be invested in other options of which real estate is one of.In stocks investment option, one is encouraged to begin with as little capital as an individual can afford while the scenario is different in real estate investment vehicle.Nevertheless, in stocks investment, little legislation is required and it is not so with the real estate investment.

Real Estate

For me, real estate has worked pretty well. I bought a property at a great price and receive monthly rents that cover all expenses. . Sometimes it does cost money, and a lot at that. Last year I spent $9,000 on two new air conditioning units. However, I also gained $10,000 in equity. . I've invested in stocks, but I always find myself selling it all at a loss to fund another real estate purchase. . I like real estate. I like owing it, working on it, leasing it, collecting money and looking for other properties at good prices. . But, I also hate paying ridiculous fees and taxes, like the Fire Department that charges me $300 per year to look at my three fire extinguishers. . In the end, it really is what you're more comfortable with and what you know. . After all, even Warren Buffet advises "Investment must be rational; If you don’t understand it, don’t do it."

Stocks vs. Real Estate

I owned a small stock brokerage firm for 25 years and spent another 7 years with big brokerage houses. Prior to that I spent 4 years investing in stocks on my own. In an effort to leave a written legacy for my kids and grandkids I wrote a concise 53 page booklet called Essentials of Investing and created a website by the same name. It may be helpful to check it out. Simply go to EssentialsofInvesting.com and see what you think. Ron Jackson a.k.a Bikesafe

Stocks vs. Real Estate

It is probably best to go with the one you have the knowledge about. I do like stocks because it requires only a small amount (few shares) to get started and liquidity is almost always good.

i believe to go with real estate if you are able and willing to put in the work. go stocks if youve never swung a hammer
